Since 2001, Woonmall Villa ArenA has been located on Johan Cruijff Boulevard in Amsterdam. Designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects, it covers approximately 75,000 m².
The woonmall houses 50 home and lifestyle stores, offering everything from furniture and flooring to kitchens, luxury bathrooms, lighting, art, and décor. Villa ArenA is open seven days a week, complete with food & beverage and child-friendly facilities. On weekends, extra services are offered to visitors, including free interior advice.
Villa ArenA is located in ArenAPoort, the premier shopping, leisure, and entertainment district of Amsterdam. Surrounded by major highways and just a five-minute walk from Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA train and metro/bus station, the mall is highly accessible. There is ample parking available in the parking deck and underground garage at Villa ArenA, at reasonable rates.
One of the first concentrations of furniture stores in the Amsterdam region was established in 1994 in Diemen, along the former A1 near the Sniep. Soon, similar thematic centers appeared in various locations and became very popular. As the Diemen stores could not expand further, there was a desire for a larger location with an even better mix of large-scale and specialist furniture stores, with more focus on hospitality and entertainment. This led to the birth of the next-generation furniture mall.
With the development of a new vibrant heart in Amsterdam-Zuidoost—featuring large retail, a megaplex cinema, and the Heineken Music Hall—the idea arose to create a furniture mall in the Arena area that would outshine the old Diemen boulevard in location and quality. Situated next to the iconic Amsterdam ArenA, home of Eredivisie club Ajax, Villa ArenA was designed with great attention to interior and exterior.
ING Real Estate Development commissioned the concept of Villa ArenA. Benthem & Crouwel Architects designed the building with a somewhat futuristic look: 75,000 square meters, four retail floors, two parking levels above, plus an underground garage, exterior louvers, a distinctive play of lines, and the literal highlight: a huge atrium with a transparent roof. The English design firm Virgile & Stone was responsible for the interior. With glass panoramic elevators, long escalators, spectacular bridges, a large water feature on the ground floor, and a ‘floating’ hospitality island 25 meters up, the dynamic interior exudes a Mediterranean atmosphere. The result is a technical marvel.
Around 70 retail formulas specializing in home and interior design in the broadest sense established themselves in Villa ArenA. The retail mix alternates large-scale suppliers with specialists. Founding entrepreneurs still present include Lederland, Houweling Interieur, De Tafelaar, Brugman Keukens, Montèl, Sanders Wonen, and Tulp Keukens. Several of these came from the Diemen furniture boulevard.
On April 10, 2001, Woonmall Villa ArenA was officially opened by then Mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen. This marked the beginning of a new shopping experience. Interior advice and styling services, unique hospitality concepts, and entertainment for all ages complete the day out. From day one, Villa ArenA was well visited.
