Unleash the interior stylist in you! A mood board is super handy when you have plans for the interior of your home and you don't know exactly what you want yet. Do you want to renovate your bathroom, redecorate your bedroom or freshen up your living room in 2021? By means of a mood board you create your own living style that then helps you apply it to the interior. Everyone can do it, it is fun to do together and such a collage clarifies a lot in advance. How do you tackle this? Follow our step-by-step plan!
1. Choose a board
Of course, it's best to get creative yourself. For a mood board, it's best to choose a sturdy background such as foam board, MDF, sturdy cardboard or canvas. You can provide the board with a background colour, but that's not necessary. If you want to (re)decorate your entire house, you can make one large mood board, but you can also choose to make a separate board for each room. And that means even more design fun!
Is a digital mood board more your thing? Then you can use (free) tools such as Adobe Spark or Canva to roll up your sleeves and create a beautiful mood palette online. These tools offer countless templates in different formats to help you get started. Pinterest is of course also very suitable for collecting a nice digital board. Before you know it, you've 'pinned' together a completely new interior style.
2. Collect
Collect photos, illustrations, advertisements, texts, prints, designs and anything that even comes close to the desired atmosphere. You often come across surprising finds in (old) magazines. A nice balance of details and overview photos often works well. Provide variation in dimensions and rhythm. Fabric and paint samples belong to a mood board. Choose various shades of the dream colours, because one grey is not the same as another. Also very inspiring: go out and photograph everything that appeals to you (think of colours, shapes, nature and architecture). Print these photos and then put them back on the board. Everything is allowed and possible, because your interior style is unique after all!
3. Select
Try to recognise a pattern or connection from everything you have collected. Combine all these ingredients and make a selection from them. Dare to show your colours and only select what you really like. So look critically at each component. If you like multiple styles, there is a good chance that you will discover the common thread between those different styles with the mood board. Think of a color scheme or completely different styles that still match very well. Our tip: find a balance in the atmosphere. For example, if you have chosen 'cooler' materials such as steel or concrete, you can add warmth in the form of wood or soft fabrics.

4. Pasting
Keep in mind that the way you paste also affects the effect. So don't paste everything on your background right away, but take the time to look at your board carefully (especially from a distance). Determine a nice composition and when you are completely satisfied, attach everything to the surface. You can also provide the board with appropriate short texts to explain your interior atmosphere. We recommend that you place the most important item in the middle to draw extra attention to it. The truly creative among us can enrich the mood board by painting or drawing on it.
5. Evaluate
When your collage is ready, evaluate the mood board together; this clarifies at an early stage whether all residents of the house interpret a concept such as 'natural' in the same way and whether something essential is still missing. This reduces the chance of miscommunication and ambiguities. When everyone is satisfied with the mood board, that is the crowning glory of your work. Now you know which materials, colours, shapes, fabrics and types of light match your interior style.
